Understanding Scoliosis in Adolescents
Scoliosis occurs when the spine curves abnormally into a C or S shape when viewed from the front. This condition can lead to significant discomfort and functional issues if not managed properly.
A Mother’s Concern: Initial Consultation
Imagine the worry of a mother who, three months ago, learned that her middle school daughter was diagnosed with scoliosis at a university hospital. The diagnosis showed a 28-degree curve in her lumbar spine, leading to the prescription of a brace. Despite about 15 sessions of exercise therapy at an exercise therapy center, the girl’s pelvic misalignment seemed to worsen, prompting her mother to seek further help at Gangnam Seran Clinic.
Comprehensive Diagnostic Assessments
At our clinic, we noticed the visible misalignment in her lumbar region. To assess her condition accurately, we conducted tests such as physical measurements, body type analysis, X-rays, gait analysis, and balance assessments. The results revealed a 35-degree curvature in her lumbar spine, and her thoracic region had also started to curve. We found abnormalities in the alignment of her lower limbs and a loss of normal cervical curvature. Her core muscles were weak, and she showed significant left-right imbalance in her gait. The lumbar spine, pelvis, and hip joints are interconnected, so changes in one area can affect the others. This explained her worsening pelvic misalignment as her scoliosis progressed.
Addressing Previous Care: A Heartfelt Conversation
I asked the mother if the previous center had addressed the pelvic misalignment issue. She said it had been mentioned but dismissed as unimportant. This oversight was concerning. When symptoms worsen, it’s crucial to re-evaluate the condition with X-rays and other diagnostic tools.
Creating a Treatment Plan for Scoliosis
I explained to the patient and her mother the relationship between the worsening lumbar curve and the pelvic misalignment. When I mentioned the 35-degree curvature, the mother asked about the possibility of surgery. I reassured her that while surgery might be necessary in the future, our immediate focus should be on preventing further deterioration and improving her condition through exercise and manual therapy. We prescribed a tailored exercise and manual therapy regimen specifically for scoliosis treatment, along with foot orthotics to aid in proper gait and balance.
Emphasizing Holistic Care: Beyond the Curvature
It’s essential not only to improve the spinal curvature but also to achieve a balanced appearance. Scoliosis is not anyone’s fault, and parents, especially mothers, should not blame themselves for a late discovery. However, the choices made after the diagnosis are crucial in managing the condition effectively.
At Gangnam Seran Clinic, we prioritize a comprehensive approach to scoliosis treatment. We ensure our patients receive the best care tailored to their specific needs.
